Some Principles that guide the work

Design grows from an understanding of purpose and context.

Understanding the client’s needs, motivation and goals for the project comes first.
Researching specific circumstances of the site can inform and help clarify these.

Respect for place matters.

Telluride is not an especially convenient place to live - or even visit - and my clients tend to be people who have chosen to be here because they are drawn to the character of the town and its surroundings. The relatively limited amount of recent development means that each new project has a significant impact, and brings with it a responsibility to be careful about what we introduce. We approach the question of how to insert a new building with a fundamental belief that it is important to make sure that what we add respects the best of what drew us here in the first place.

The best design involves a team of specialists.

In most cases, a successful project benefits from the expertise of Geotechnical, Civil, Structural and Mechanical Engineers, along with Landscape, Lighting, and Interior Designers.  Early engagement of an experienced General Contractor with access to local skilled tradespeople is invaluable in developing a realistic project budget and timeline.

A smooth construction process requires thorough documents.

Good design has limited value without Construction Documents that clearly communicate the intent.  This takes time, attention to detail, a basic understanding of the construction process, and collaboration with those who will take on the responsibility of execution.
