House on East Pandora Avenue

Telluride, CO

The site for this house is a standard sized single town lot located in east Telluride on a steep south-facing slope between two existing houses. To the south are views of the Bear Creek drainage and surrounding peaks.

The location is just outside the design district containing most of the town’s historic residential buildings. The design of the house shares the simple form and roof detailing found in the historical structures nearby.

The lot shape and the clients’ program suggested a long narrow rectangular plan. The building mass steps back from the street as it rises up the slope, creating open decks over living space on the south side that serve as outdoor extensions of the living room and master bedroom. The three levels of the house are linked by stacked open stairways, illuminated from above by skylights. The single gabled roof is supported by douglas fir rafters with steel collar ties, which are exposed in vaulted spaces at the upper level.
